“Own Way” is a song by Spanish-American R&B and Hip-Hop singer-songwriter Kara Romero, serving as the first official release from her upcoming third studio album expected to be released in late 2026. The track comes following Romero’s slow rise through the industry, debuting in the 2010’s she didn’t start to find momentum until the 2020’s with the release of her sophomore album “Post-Traumatic” which eventually delivered her first few hints after a decade in the industry. Now as a highly anticipated mainstream artist, Romero finds herself stepping back out on her own following 2025’s brief collaborative run with rapper Younghood on “The Bedroom Sessions (Vol. I)” which showcased a more unapologetic and mature explicit side to her work. While details surrounding her next studio album are still under wraps, it’s thought that she has already recorded a handful of tracks for the project with more studio sessions locked in for early 2026 on the still evolving project. However, fans have already speculated that lead single “Own Way” indicates an early statement of individuality and self-assurance, signalling Romero’s next chapter as one that is likely to be defined by self-confidence, self-reflection and complete creative control.

Although Romero has previously garnered acclaim for her songwriting growth, fans have pointed to her early work in comparison to the lyrics in recent years as clear evidence of her artistic evolution, “Own Way” represents a more obvious shift in her own artistic direction with the writing and co-production being helmed by Romero herself alongside producer BLOOM. Having notably spent years of her career struggling to shape her sound and identity, starting out as an alternative rock artist before eventually finding her path in an alt-leaning R&B direction with elements of Hip-Hop and Rap, her fanbase have immediately praised the track for being the full circle moment of an artist truly discovering her identity.
The release of “Own Way” comes at a pivotal moment in Romero’s career, immediately setting the tone for what many expect to be her most personal and mature sounding project to date. Known for her heart-on-the-sleeve confessional lyrics and in recent years her more risqué explicit imagery, fans and critics alike have reacted with excitement to the single, praising it as a perfect way to kick off this next era with such a self-confident and bold statement on identity and self-believe. While some have noted that dropping such an introspective and self-affirming single ahead of her next project feels like Romero truly establishing her voice and her vision, giving fans a glimpse into her current mindset before the full rollout begins in the new year.

Written in August 2025 and recorded at Sonic Lounge Studios in Atlanta, Georgia in a change of pace for Romero who has only ever previously recorded at Basement Studios in New York. The track blends a stripped-back R&B vibe with subtle elements of hip-hop. Produced by Kara Romero alongside renowned producer BLOOM for the first time, “Own Way” serves as the first official single from her forthcoming project and will be released through Just Record as a CD Single, Digital Download and 7” Single while also being made available to Weekly Airplay and available on all major streaming platforms from November 23, 2025.

Song Description;

The track opens in a stripped-back, introspective manner, just the soft crackle of studio set-up sounds faintly heard before the sound of feedback from a microphone before we hear the soft tones of Kara’s speaking voice, “We good?” she can be heard saying faintly before getting the go ahead from her producer as a muted synth tone can be heard indicating the beginning of the tracks instrumental backdrop, immediately setting a relaxed late-night vibe. A piano riff loops throughout the opening moments of the song, combining with the soft synth tones to give the track a feeling of intimacy and solitude. Kara’s vocals enter in a low, chilled out tone as she delivers the opening message, “I been movin’ different, not for show, not for status/So used to chasing approval like it mattered where the path is/Finally cut through the static, this clarity feels magic/Putting my preaching into practice/Fuck, I get so distracted.” which is delivered in an relaxed RnB tone with a slight rap flow to her rhythm before continuing, “But now the only path that I follow is mine/Eyes wide open all the time, I ain’t gonna be the one to miss the signs/I’ve always been an artist that draws with crooked lines/Ain’t perfect to everybody, to somebody it’s divine/I go silent and they confuse it with surrender/Every battle that I’ve fought is another scar that I remember/Now the only expectation is my own/Won’t crumble under pressure.” And from the first line, it becomes clear that the track is an introspective one, a declaration of her own vision and independence, shedding any external expectations and stepping away from outside noise.

As the pre-chorus and hook combination arrive, the instrumental rises in intensity creating a swell that builds from the pre-chorus and peaks at the close of the hook, the sound of a rhythmic snare drum pattern adds an effective pulse and intensity to the song as Kara combines elements of both RnB and Hip-Hop within the track. Her delivery feels full of more intent and passion as the track progresses, “Don’t need direction, I trust the feeling/Ain’t nothing fake about this shit, everything I do is stripped back and revealed/My default mode is love, but I carry it like steel/Equipped with my armour and shield/Telling everybody peace is real.” which gives the song a build with the increase in vocal dominance from Kara and the more urgent piano chords highlighting the sense of build within the track as we move towards the songs hook.
As the hook arrives, it encompasses the theme of the track to this point, wrapping things up in a tightly knit bow, highlighting the sense of independence and unrelenting vision as Kara sings, “I go my own way, I don’t stray/Can’t hide a thing, ain’t no fake smile on my face/Tried to dim the light, I was born to blaze/Truth runs through my blood with everything that I create/I plant the seeds for the shade they throw on me/I speak real, turn pain into melodies/Their doubt don’t stick with me, ain’t ever lived rent free/This soul moves from place to place/I go my own way.” which highlights the songs overall theme, seemingly taken from Kara’s own internal battles in finding her own voice and vision within the music industry.

As the second verse arrives, the arrangement continues to add some additional urgency, the drum fills feel heavier and the sound of a bassline pulsates underneath the music, the pacing feeling more deliberate in contrast the more RnB leaning relaxed tone of the opening verse. While Kara’s vocal delivery feels more sharp and aggressive, leaning more into her hip-hop delivery “I’ve been through the earthquakes and been unshakable/Got shit to say, my words are non-negotiable/Every rejection that I’ve heard has turned me uncontrollable/My energy is so open, but my spirit is untouchable/Never fought for a lane, I just paved my own/Gave myself a crown long before they ever thought I deserved one.” the contrast between the opening verse and the second verse feeling evident as Kara takes on a more confrontational, speak with your chest mantra, “This shit ain’t ego, it’s just base-level freedom/When you know your own worth, you don’t ever need to go and plead for them/I’m past the hype, past the trends/I’m just doing me, ain’t out here pretending/I don’t make shit for them/I don’t ever want to just blend in/Every version of me, led me here once again/No bitterness, just time and distance/No gimmicks, just intention/Cause real art don’t ever beg for attention/It commands it, and you can’t deny this bitch transcends it.” which serves to complete the cycle of the songs overall theme, starting introspective and self-reflective before expanding into self-confidence and assertiveness.
The songs pre-chorus and hook returns once more, following up on the second verse and bringing the track full circle. Kara’s voice softens around the edges on the tracks final hook, returning things to that initial relaxed RnB vibe, no dramatic statements to close things out just Kara’s vocal softly letting people know, “I go my own way.”

“Own Way”

“I been movin’ different, not for show, not for status
So used to chasing approval like it mattered where the path is
Finally cut through the static, this clarity feels magic
Putting my preaching into practice
Fuck, I get so distracted
But now the only path that I follow is mine
Eyes wide open all the time, I ain’t gonna be the one to miss the signs
I’ve always been an artist that draws with crooked lines
Ain’t perfect to everybody, to somebody it’s divine
I go silent and they confuse it with surrender
Every battle that I’ve fought is another scar that I remember
Now the only expectation is my own
Won’t crumble under pressure

Don’t need direction, I trust the feeling
Ain’t nothing fake about this shit, everything I do is stripped back and revealed
My default mode is love, but I carry it like steel
Equipped with my armour and shield
Telling everybody peace is real

I go my own way, I don’t stray
Can’t hide a thing, ain’t no fake smile on my face
Tried to dim the light, I was born to blaze
Truth runs through my blood with everything that I create
I plant the seeds for the shade they throw on me
I speak real, turn pain into melodies
Their doubt don’t stick with me, ain’t ever lived rent free
This soul moves from place to place
I go my own way

I’ve been through the earthquakes and been unshakable
Got shit to say, my words are non-negotiable
Every rejection that I’ve heard has turned me uncontrollable
My energy is so open, but my spirit is untouchable
Never fought for a lane, I just paved my own
Gave myself a crown long before they ever thought I deserved one
This shit ain’t ego, it’s just base-level freedom
When you know your own worth, you don’t ever need to go and plead for them
I’m past the hype, past the trends
I’m just doing me, ain’t out here pretending
I don’t make shit for them
I don’t ever want to just blend in
Every version of me, led me here once again
No bitterness, just time and distance
No gimmicks, just intention
Cause real art don’t ever beg for attention
It commands it, and you can’t deny this bitch transcends it

Don’t need direction, I trust the feeling
Ain’t nothing fake about this shit, everything I do is stripped back and revealed
My default mode is love, but I carry it like steel
Equipped with my armour and shield
Telling everybody peace is real

I go my own way, I don’t stray
Can’t hide a thing, ain’t no fake smile on my face
Tried to dim the light, I was born to blaze
Truth runs through my blood with everything that I create
I plant the seeds for the shade they throw on me
I speak real, turn pain into melodies
Their doubt don’t stick with me, ain’t ever lived rent free
This soul moves from place to place
I go my own way”

BLOOM: It has been such an honor not only getting the chance to work with you lately but also getting to know you as both a person and artist. I'm not saying this simply because I co-produced it but I'm glad to see that "Own Way" is how you've chosen to kickstart your brand new era. It feels like the perfect mixture of a pallet cleanser with its freshness but also a stark reminder of who the fuck you are. "Don’t need direction, I trust the feeling", "I go my own way, I don’t stray". I really felt that shit in the studio. This is your world and I'm just grateful to be part of it, Ms. Kara. A true master of your craft.

Kara: Oh man, Cristian, I’m so proud of the tracks we’ve put together so far, it’s the first time I feel like there’s a true vision on a record of mine and I can’t thank you enough for helping produce a lot of this next album. “Own Way” felt like the perfect track to personify this next run and serve as a teaser at the same time. I can’t thank you enough for your time and patience on the record that I truly believe is my coming of age era.
