"Roadkill" is the debut song by American singer-songwriter and model Alison Warren. It was released on February 14, 2026, through Nashville-based independent imprint Electric Gold Sounds. Co-written by Warren and its producer Ryan Ross Hernandez, the song is a confessional alternative pop track noted for its sharp tonal pivot and emotionally ironic lyricism.

After several years working in high-fashion campaigns and editorial modeling, Warren began developing music privately in mid-2025 before relocating to Nashville temporarily to work with Hernandez on a handful of tracks. On an Instagram reel, she described "Roadkill" as originating from personal journal entries written in the aftermath of an intense breakup. The song was teased on Warren's social media accounts in February 2026 using cryptic roadside imagery and short vocal snippets. It was released to streaming platforms and pushed onto alternative pop and indie playlists, with Variety reporting that her management planned on using a "slow-burn" approach to promote Warren.

Upon release, "Roadkill" attracted attention from online music critics and listeners for its theatrical structure and cutting breakup narrative, as well as Hernandez's eccentric production. Some fans did criticize her association with Hernandez and noted what they perceived as an "inauthentic" indie aesthetic from Warren compared to her mainstream modeling work. The single marked Warren's formal transition from fashion modeling into recording music, becoming the first act signed onto Electric Gold Sounds talent division, co-founded by Hernandez.

Writing and Composition

"Roadkill" is structured as a multi-movement breakup narrative distinguished by a dramatic mid-song tonal shift. Musically, the first half unfolds as a restrained, jazz-leaning alternative pop ballad built around muted electric guitar, brushed percussion, and intimate, near-whispered vocals. Warren delivers the opening verses with controlled detachment, framing the relationship’s collapse with cool irony.

Roughly midway through the song, the production pivots sharply into an uptempo electro-pop section driven by pulsing synth bass, sharper percussion, and layered vocal processing. The structural change mirrors the narrator's emotional escalation, transforming composure into open defiance. Hernandez heavily manipulates Warren's vocals with Auto-Tone on the second half, at times nearly downed out under the 80s-inspired synths and drum machines.

Lyrically, "Roadkill" explores themes of post-breakup narrative control, emotional gaslighting, and the reclamation of identity following a romantic fallout. Warren described the song as capturing "the second you realize you weren't the tragedy — you were just the one who survived it." Critics noted that the song's two-part architecture reflects a broader contemporary pop trend toward genre-blending, emotionally volatile song forms.

Background

Alison Marie Warren was born on September 12, 2000, in Los Angeles, California, to Jonathan Warren, a former three-term United States Senator from California, and Marisa Elaine Stewart-Warren, currently a U.S. Congresswoman representing California's 36th district, both prominent names in the Democratic Party since the late-1990s. Due to her parents constant cross-country travels to Washington D.C., Warren was homeschooled. Warren was raised in a politically engaged household where her parents balanced public service with active support for arts and education initiatives. She began taking piano and singing lessons at age six and by her adolescence years she began posting on YouTube song covers she made of Alicia Lena, Ellie-Grace Summers, Stevie Nicks, Isabel Merjos, and Fiona Apple, among others.

After wrapping her high school studies in 2018, Warren enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, majoring in Music Business/Management with an undergraduate in Songwriting. At Berklee, she was a member of the student songwriting collective, collaborated with peers across genres, and organized showcases that paired emerging musicians with industry professionals. In 2020, she met Ryan Ross Hernandez at a fundraiser for her father's U.S. Senate campaign, and that same year during the Covid-19 global pandemic Hernandez offered her guitar lessons via FaceTime. The two maintained a friendship ever since then. She graduated summa cum laude from Berklee in 2021, earning recognition for her senior thesis project on the intersection of brand partnerships and artist development in the digital era.

While attending Berklee College of Music, Warren began to model, ranging from regional fashion publications to international campaigns. Her early work included editorial features in independent fashion magazines, after which she was signed by a New York–based talent agency. Warren quickly garnered attention from luxury fashion houses for her classic yet modern aesthetic. She has worked with designers and brands including: Gucci, Dior, and Chanel, the latter of which she made runway appearances for during Milan Fashion Week in 2024 and has been included in their global brand campaigns. Her runway presence and print work have been featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle, among other international fashion publications.

When she opted to pursue her own foray into recording music, she stepped away from her talent agency, taking a self-imposed "hiatus" from modeling. Upon the release of "Roadkill" she revealed that Hernandez convinced her to sign onto Electric Gold Sounds, his independent imprint and management company, after she sent him the demos she had been working on.

Song Commentary

On February 14, 2026, when the song was officially released to streaming platforms, which coincided with Valentine's Day, Warren took to her Instagram page and her 750k followers to share more details about the song's inspiration as well as its creation via a reel post with the caption "anti-valentine's day song released on valentine's day". On the same day Warren cleared out most of her previous post across all her social media accounts, leaving only the snippets she shared leading up to the release.

Alison Warren wrote:
"What do you get when you feel stagnant in life? Apparently you blow it all up. About a year ago I was stuck in this vicious cycle where my career was no longer fulfilling me like it once did. I know on the surface I likely had nothing to complain about working with luxury brands on the regular is only a dream for so many out there. Yet I've spent most of my life studying music and playing instruments, it's been my main passion since I was young - it's why I went to Berklee College of Music - and I was putting none of that to use. It felt like there was this gap.

Last summer I went through a brutal breakup that was the last string to come undone. It unraveled, well, everything. My emotions ranged from a pit of despair to boiling anger and I wasn't sure how to channel them in a healthy fashion. I've known Ryan Ross Hernandez for a number of years, he's a family friend, and I've become friends with him and his supremely talented girlfriend Ellie-Grace Summers in the time since. When I met up with them for dinner when they were visiting NYC last August they both challenged me to take how I was feeling and put it to paper, put it to song. So basically for two months thereafter I was keeping track of every idea that I had and saving it. I sent Ryan a lot of half-baked demos that I made by myself in my apartment and within a week he was asking me how quickly I could go down to Nashville to properly get into a studio and record.

"Roadkill" is about the perspective you earn after a relationship ends and you can see things for how they actually were, without any rose-colored lens on. It's where you've pieced it together and realize how awful that other person in your life was. You're still pissed and sad and all the other emotions that come with getting your heartbroken, but you are on the other side of it - you made it past the wreckage. The second you realize you weren't the tragedy — you were just the one who survived it. This song is basically pulling direct quotes from journal entries I made that I never thought would see the light of day. It was Ryan's idea to construct it in this epic sort of two-piece where you have this gentle and docile jazzy first half, before it picks up and becomes this hyper electronic almost club track. I loved it when we made it a few months ago and I still do today.

Now that the song is out in the world and we enter the "wait-and-see" period, I want to emphasize how thankful I am to have this opportunity. All of it. I want to thank Ryan and Ellie-Grace for making me feel so welcomed and at home and just being super supportive. It's not lost to me how lucky I am to work with Ryan who had a hand producing the debut records of Ellie-Grace, Alicia Lena, Amy Meyer with Riot in the Boulevard - all artists I love and grew up on - and he is just a fucking legend in his own right.

We made a handful of songs together during those sessions in Nashville and hopefully in the next few months the rest will see the light of day. I'm excited to keep creating and just see where this journey goes. Hope you enjoy "Roadkill" - stream it, buy a digital download of it - and maybe we'll do a cool 7-inch vinyl release or something soon. Thank you for listening!"

Critical Reception

At time of release "Roadkill" received generally positive acclaim from music critics, with most praising Warren's narrative voice and theatrical instincts while noting Hernandez's expansive production. Rolling Stone characterized the song as a "strikingly self-aware debut," commending Warren's ability to balance emotional detachment with simmering resentment in her delivery. The publication particularly highlighted the song's structural pivot, calling the second half a "knife-twist escalation," highlighting Hernandez's tonal shift to match the emotions. Pitchfork's Maddie Clark offered similarly favorable commentary, describing Warren's vocal approach as "coolly conversational - not dissimilar to her mentor - before turning razor-sharp." The outlet praised the track's sense of modernity, noting that Warren demonstrates "a strong grasp of irony as emotional armor," and predicting she could become "a compelling new voice to a Gen Z and Gen Alpha crowd."

PopMatters gave the track a positive review, emphasizing the lyrical framing of post-relationship narrative control. The publication wrote that Warren "at 25-years old understands the psychology of the modern breakup," though it noted that her vocal range "was more about texture than power" and pondered on how it could translate to a live setting. Alyssa Hendricks of NPR was among the more enthusiastic early supporters, calling "Roadkill" "a quietly vicious introduction" and praising its replay value and "undeniably sticky" hook. Uproxx singled out Warren's restrained delivery in the first half as the song's strongest element, stating that the performance "feels diaristic without becoming indulgent" and praised Hernandez's incorporation of both old-school and modern sounds.

Curtis Ferguson writing for Paste Magazine provided a more mixed assessment. While acknowledging the single's commercial instincts and memorable chorus, the review argued that the mid-song shift felt "somewhat calculated - if not needlessly excessive," suggesting the production occasionally prioritized drama over cohesion. However, the outlet ultimately concluded that Warren shows "clear potential and an unusually defined point of view," while arguing that Hernandez must not be a "backseat driver" for Warren to succeed. Popular YouTube music critic The Stencil Fall felt that the concept lacked substance and the vocals were "a study in boredom," while the production was "trend-aware to a fault and failed" at attempting to create a viral TikTok moment.

"Roadkill"

[Section 1]
You left like a siren cutting through the silence
Lights flashing in the rearview truth
Said love shouldn't feel like a battlefield
But you were the one who liked to shoot me down
Hands in your pockets looking so cool
I was white-knuckled holding on to nothing
Trying to keep our engine breathing
While you let me die on the side of the road
You called me dramatic, called me insane
Like I was the storm you had to outrun
You were the match to every dry field we passed
Don't act like you weren't an arsonist

You swore I was poison in your bloodstream
A fever you had to kill
But I was just a mirror in your passenger seat
Showing you what you did

Now I'm roadkill on your wandering heart
Thrown from the wreckage you made
You hit the gas, you didn't brake
Now I'm scattered on the interstate
You say you survived, you say you healed
You say I was the thrill
But you don't get to drive away clean
And leave me here like roadkill

Your friends all drink to your freedom now
Paint me as some deranged femme fatale
You curate truth like a gallery wall
Hang my worst nights in your hall
You gaslighting piece of shit
Tell them I screamed, tell them I broke
Tell them I pushed you to the brink
Don't tell them how you'd twist my words
Until I forgot how to think

You said I was too much to handle
Too wild to ever fulfill
But you just wanted something breathing
That you could break at will

Now I'm roadkill on your wandering heart
Thrown from the wreckage you made
You hit the gas, you didn't brake
Now I'm scattered on the interstate
You say you survived, you say you healed
You say I was the thrill
But you don't get absolution
For leaving me here like roadkill

Now I'm roadkill on your wandering heart
Thrown from the wreckage you made
You hit the gas, you didn't brake
Now I'm scattered on the interstate
You say you survived, you say you healed
You say I was the thrill
But you don't get to walk away unscathed
You thought I'd be permanent roadkill

[Section 2]
I see your name in every headline lie
Hear your version on repeat
You weaponized my tenderness
And called it self-defense on me
You tell the world I lost my mind
Maybe I did for you
But loving someone reckless
Will make a wreckage out of you

I was roadkill on your wandering heart
You say you survived, you say you healed
You say I was the thrill
You thought I'd be permanent roadkill

And I am not the body left for dead
On the side of the road
I'm the high beams on the sixteen wheeler
Could drive you off the cliff if I want
I'm the girl who crawled from twisted steel
And learned to stand and fight
Pulled all the glass out of my skin
And I didn't bleed out like you wanted me to

I was roadkill on your wandering heart
You say you survived, you say you healed
You say I was the thrill
You thought I'd be permanent roadkill

I was roadkill on your wandering heart
But I'm not there anymore
I gathered up my broken bones
From the shoulder of your war
You can keep your speeding alibi
Your half-confessed guilt trips
I'm not your cautionary tale
I'm the crash you can't forget
You narcissistic son of a bitch

It's ironic that this single gets released on the same day where Christophe Deckers from Toute Rancune made a statement diminishing today's music as 'all about prefabricated pop music and lousy hip hop'.

Ashford: Congratulations on a truly beautiful and uniquely individual debut track Alison. Given your background, it could have been so easy for you to surround yourself with guns for hire in terms of pop specialists and make this a vanity project. But from the very outset, you've created something with it's own personality, the shades of eighties synth-pop and modern indie elements make this a much more interesting alternative pop track and for me, the more variety we have within the broader scope of pop music is greatly needed. Your song writing, albeit it alongside a pro like Hernandez is beautifully raw and emotive, extremely clever and subtle in places make this an impressively promising debut.

Ellie-Grace: Trying my absolute best to keep personal bias aside but even making that claim is futile in the first place because all I can do is gush! People may be under the misapprehension that this is some sort of vanity project for all involved but I want to go on record to fully refute that notion. Ryan's not getting the credit for this, hehe! When I was first introduced to you, you were already a fully formed artist in your own right, Alison. Everything from what you want to say, where you pull from, how you want to sound and the way in which is want it to be presented to the world - it's all quintessentially Alison Warren. Your penmanship and sound is on another level. Your voice within pop music is certainly going to broaden its horizon and push goalposts. I'm excited for the rest of the world to get on board in real time and witness what you can do! All the best, my darling - EG x

OOC: Great to see this finally off the ground! Knew this was coming for a little while and remember the conversations we had about you finally starting up a new character. Have to say, I hope that any reservations you had have been put to rest. This is a brilliant debut for Alison and it's going to be really interesting and intriguing to see where you go with her. Consider me excited! Great job, my friend :)

Alison: Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and the kind words to boot! I always told myself if I was going to take the plunge into this world as an artist and songwriter it had to happen organically. I never wanted to force my way into this space I respect and admire so much simply for the sake of doing so. I needed to have something to say. "Roadkill" kind of came out in a blur and it felt like we took a dozen different genres and threw them into a blender and somehow it worked? None of this would have been possible without boss man Hernandez but I'm vastly proud of what we created. Excited to continue to just keep creating music! Thanks again, Mr. York!

Alison: Ellie-Grace! You were instrumental to all this happening in the first place as well, more than you'll ever know. From encouraging me to just start creating regardless of what came out of it, to sharing your perspective of being a female artist in this industry for such a long time, to always being so generous with your feedback on whatever I play for you. Befriending Ryan was all a ruse so he could introduce me to you! It still feels a tad bit surreal that a song with my name on it is out in the world for people to listen. I'm doing my best to take it all step by step but also excited to continue onward to whatever this all may lead to. Thank you so much for everything!

OOC: Took me long enough, huh? Haha. I appreciate the encouragement then and now as well! It was good to get the ball rolling with Alison and unlike RRH this is a character where I am kind of building as I go without any set goals which is fun too. I am looking forward to doing more with her in the coming months.
Thank you to everyone else that commented as well!
