It serves as Honeyman's debut single, being released independently to streaming services and digital outlets only. The track was entirely written and produced solely by Danse. "Scar Tissue" was initially released on April 20, 2025 to little fanfare and traction as expected for an unsigned, unknown artist. In August 2025, "Scar Tissue" and Danse began to garner media attention after going viral on social media app TikTok with many spectators praising the track as well as launching an investigation into the true identity of its masked performer. Prior to the song's release, Honeyman had very little social media presence, with the only few photos of him in existence consisting of Danse covering his face. The lyrical themes of domestic abuse and homosexuality set against a Country music background, a genre now closely associated with conservative values in modern day America, also earned acclaim and intrigue. BACKGROUNDDanse Honeyman was born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where he works as both a warehouse associate for ACE Hardware and session musician for local talent. Despite having to hold down two jobs due to the financial instability of his fleeting session musician hirings, Honeyman's passion and love for music supersedes any struggle and uncertainty. Working in the local music scene for over 15 years, Danse has performed backing vocals, bass guitar, electric guitar and piano both on stage and in the recording studio for multiple homegrown, local acts. He has also been a fixture on stage in local bars for numerous years, performing at many open mic and karaoke nights. In 2023, a physical attack at the hands of his long-term, abusive partner left Danse badly wounded and ultimately scarred across the top half of his face. This altercation resulted in Honeyman almost losing his left eye. With the conclusion of his relationship and resulting afflictions, Danse retreated from his much-loved stage performances.
With the know-how and years of experience, Danse began to write and compose his own music in 2024 during some personal downtime. Despite having composed an alleged "plethora" of songs throughout the year, it was never shared or performed. Instead, Honeyman viewed his compositions as "therapy" and "sonic letters to burn". It wouldn't be until the following year that Danse would share his music with a few select and trusted friends. Although receiving unanimous praise and being heavily encouraged to return to the local music scene to showcase his compositions, Danse still rejected the idea, citing anxiety attacks as his major concern.
Honeyman's close friends continued to try and pursued him into sharing his work with others, believing that his talent was being stifled and unappreciated. After much consideration, Danse slowly came around to the idea in part. Not wishing to physically appear on stage and having to perform these deeply personal songs to strangers - who he also feared would be distracted and intrigued by his facial scarring - Honeyman decided to upload and release one of his tracks. "Scar Tissue" was initially released with basic artwork consisting of a black background and his name and the song's title in a plain white text. Danse's reasoning behind this release was his belief that "the people who care can listen" while he himself still simultaneously remains "remote" and "non-committal".
A song by an unknown man released independently with no distribution deal or imagery behind it, "Scar Tissue" only garnered a lowly 937 streams across all streaming platforms between the period of its release in April 2025 and July, still admittedly more than Honeyman had ever anticipated. The following month, a user on TikTok named
'itskellybaby' posted a video using the song which consisted of lonely desert landscapes at dusk with the caption;
"Who is this ethereal soul and why am I crying?!" typed across the images. The post started to gain momentum, simultaneously introducing the song to new fans as well as launching an investigation into the identity behind the singer. As of August 2025, the song's "sound" has been used in an impressive 798.11k TikTok posts.
The unexpected viral nature of the song prompted Danse to take his sole musical release "more seriously", resulting in new artwork being released in order to create a "professional" feel. Still not wishing to reveal his face and also working with a practically non-existent budget, Danse purchased props from a local costume store which included a black eye mask, cowboy hat and a large, rose decoration. Honeyman's friend took the image for the new artwork in her own hallway on her iPhone, with Danse editing the lighting and adding text using free online photo editing software.
SONG COMMENTARYAfter the song gained its viral internet moment, Danse took to his personal Instagram page to celebrate and share his thoughts on the entire experience. The post was accompanied by an image of the song's updated artwork. It was the reclusive Honeyman's third ever post on his account, the first two consisting of an image of his cat in his backyard and one of a pizza box. Taking to the social media app, he wrote;
Danse wrote:"When I wrote and recorded 'Scar Tissue' last year I had no intention of anyone ever hearing it. It was merely my own form of therapy. Sonic burn letters, if you will. I never envisioned my words, my creation, my own little safe haven would reach an audience so huge. Not only that, but for it to be so warmly received. You see, this was never meant to happen to someone like me. As you can tell, I'm not a big social media user nor am I one for the cameras and fanfare. I am utterly perplexed by this situation. Overwhelmed is a perfect description too. This is incredibly dauting to say the least. Nevertheless, the overriding feeling is one of sheer gratitude. It is almost impossible to fathom what has happened here. I am just a guy who works for a hardware company with a lot of emotional baggage. I'm nothing spectacular. I uploaded my track for close friends and family who are champions of my musical side to listen to. Now it is trending across the globe. Many people spend a lifetime trying to achieve a moment like this. I didn't. That was never the goal. In many ways, I feel incredibly fraudulent. I hope another budding artist gets their turn next."
"Naturally, I've had many questions sent to me by those savvy enough to find my barely used social media accounts. Why the mask? Why the anonymity? What's the deal with the lyrics? The track itself is rather explanatory but I'll lay it all out as best I can within the character limit. Basically, I was in an abusive 12 year relationship both mentally and physically. Yes, it was with a man. It all culminated in 2023 when I took a broken beer bottle to the face, almost losing my left eye. This is my reasoning behind wearing a mask in the artwork and why I have no pictures of myself online. I even removed older photos as I couldn't stand to look at them. It was like a cruel 'before and after' thing that I just couldn't escape. While I'm no longer with the monster behind it, the remnants remain - mentally and physically. That is what the song is about. Abuse isn't a one and done thing. It's a slow burn. It builds. It creeps in. It catches you off guard. It sets up camp. It gets its feet under the table. It overstays its welcome. The smoker might be gone but the stench still lingers in the air and the nicotine discolours your walls."

CRITICAL RECEPTIONUpon gaining traction on social media, "Scar Tissue" began to accumulate a mass of critical acclaim with many reviewers and publications highlighting the "high quality and professionalism" of the independently produced song's composure, as well as lauding Honeyman's "brutally honest" lyricism and low, baritone voice. Benjamin Thomas of
The Guardian praised the track for its
"timeless" sonics and believed it to sound like an
"instant classic".
The Line of Best Fit's Erica Nyland echoed similar sentiments, writing;
"Combining the comfort of classic country, nostalgic hug of 70's soft rock and the irresistible, smooth bounce of 90's R&B, this mystery man has eerily crafted a song that sounds as if it has been in our homes and hearts for generations." Multiple critics cited the track's nostalgic feel with many comparing it to a "lost Fleetwood Mac classic". Gillian Radnor of
