Artist: Mercedes

Genre(s): Punk-Pop, New Wave, Pop Rock
Length: 4:35
Writer(s): M.Payne
Producer(s): golightly
Label: Five Pesky Kids
From The Album: A Woman's Work

INFORMATION

"China Patternzzz" is a song recorded by British singer-songwriter Mercedes. The track was released through Five Pesky Kids on November 30th, 2025 after being formally announced and made available to pre-order and pre-save across all streaming platforms two days prior. "China Patternzzz" serves as the fourth official single from Mercedes' long-awaited debut studio album "A Woman's Work", following on from the highly successful chart-topping "No Guts, No Glory" with Riley Hamilton, "Makeshift Chemistry" and "The Horse You Rode In On" with Jack Dunn. The track was written entirely by Mercedes, penned after her official return to music in the spring of 2025, becoming one of the last songs created for the project. Production was handled by golightly, an all-female production trio based in London. The track has been sent to digital platforms with both the original explicit and an edited clean version available for streaming. A radio version omitting the sound of a gun being fired has also been serviced to stations.

Lyrically, "China Patternzzz" sees Mercedes express her disdain and disapproval of her best male friend's fiancée. She exposes the fear which is consuming her, afraid that she will lose her life-long friend once he's married as she is already noticing him growing more and more distant as he inches closer and closer to walking down the aisle with his future bride. Mercedes also reveals her mental exhaustion surrounding wedding conversations over inane details such as the pattern on the wedding China. Adamant that she doesn't wish to switch places as it's purely platonic, Mercedes tries her best to bite her tongue and support her friend by integrating with his partner more but it is futile. The track sees the internal conflict and inner dialogue of Mercedes as she combats her own feelings, insecurities and frustrations. As the song progresses through the bridge and later, the closing hook, Mercedes begrudgingly accepts the new path her friend is going on and let's go - albeit through gritted teeth as she likens the marriage to death and seeing him 'on the other side'. "China Patternzzz" deals with themes of female jealousy, self worth, loss of a friendship and moral dilemmas.

"China Patternzzz" is a pop-punk, pop-rock and New Wave song, heavily inspired by the throwback, "rebellious" and "punchy" sonics of her #1 comeback single "No Guts, No Glory". The track opens and closes with soundbites of her best friend's fiancée talking zealously about her future wedding. The woman possesses a nasally and shrill southern English accent. The song ends with the sound of a shotgun being fired, cutting off the woman mid-sentence, highlighting Mercedes' darkest thoughts in regards to getting rid of her. This contradicts the opening line in which Mercedes claims she doesn't wish that the girl was dead, showing how far the events have mentally pushed her. The radio versions omit this sound effect. "China Patternzzz" has been compared to music releases of the late 1970's as it echoes the sounds of early New Wave and punk crossover releases as well as lightly dabbling in Disco and synthesised pop. The song boasts as "large" and "vast" soundscape, combining programmed synths with heavy guitars and crashing cymbals.

SONG COMMENTARY

Mercedes wrote:
"This is the last song that I coined for my album but in terms of lyrical content, it's based on a time long ago. I'm talking before I signed anything relating to music. When I decided that I wanted to tackle this subject, I was inspired by and channelling the works of acts like Atomic War Bride, Ryan Ross Hernandez, Layla, Jack Dunn - artists that are often very blunt and straight to the point, not worried about if they're coming across as antagonistic, too revealing or even crass. Openly admitting your jealousy and hatred for another woman isn't really the done thing. It's not something I advocate for either but it's real and it happens. I don't think we should censor our emotions and bottle them all up in order to be palatable. That doesn't help resolve or release anything healthily. Sometimes people need an angry song to work through some tough emotions. We all need that catharsis at times and have that yearning to be heard regardless of how niche, specific, big or small an issue is. That's why I went for it. Cards on the table. I absolutely hated this girl!"

"It played out as suspected. I'm no longer friends with this guy who, at one point, was my entire world. It is what it is and now, with all these years gone by and actual life experience, I can see how much of a moody cow I was about it all. I get it. You can't live out your life and sacrifice your happiness for the sake of someone else and keeping the status quo. Even though it takes aim at this girl, "China Patternzzz" holds a lot more underneath the surface. It's really about my own insecurities and fear of growing up and letting things go. It takes place at that time where you first start getting some independence. You know, prior to that your life is far simpler and somewhat scripted. You don't chose your school, who's in your class, what's for dinner and all that. As children, you make do. Life is what it is and you think it's going to be that breezy forever, that your best mates in school will be by your side for life. "China Patternzzz" is about your best mate growing up before you do, making life changing decisions before you're ready. It's easy to point the finger and feel hard done by. At the end of the day, however, it all boiled down to the circle of life."

"That girl was pretty annoying though, to be fair."

"CHINA PATTERNZZZ"

"OK, so my veil will be hand-stitched by blind Belgian nuns..."

Wouldn't go as far as to wishing she was dead
But the shrillness of her voice goes through my fucking head
Sure, she's attractive if you like that sort of thing
Piece of Lycra carrying a woman and Ramsdens' finest ring
I'm being a bitch, yeah, I know it's diabolical
And now's not the time to get all philosophical
But can we please change the subject?
Can you just pick up on my subtext?
Can she let the conversation revolve around somebody else?
All this happiness sure is making me feel shit about myself

I'm not suggesting that I wish that it was me
Simply losing a friend I had since I was three
On the road and you still filled my social calendar
Some redhead comes along and now I'm a non-factor
Not saying I hate her but...

I couldn't care less about your China patterns
Swear to Lucifer if I have to look at another photo
Tell me again how you're both ruled by Saturn
I'll disassociate or flip into the danger zone
Hard to know my own mind when it's filled with China patterns
And patronising quips about catching the bouquet
The boy I love, his ashes are about to be scattered
Don't really wanna save the date, babe

I'm more than accustomed to the dysfunctional
Fight or flight business, wrestled with the irrational
Ticking over and over, just one thing I can't get my head around
Why am I being such a dickhead when I should be so proud?
Hold up, wait, let's not pour a tonne of salt upon the cut
Get a little too uncomfortable when the mirror's held right up
Swear I'm making an effort, closing my big mouth
Movie night and Morgan's on her crushed velvet couch
She wants to hear all our stories, gather teasing ammunition
I regale misty-eyed 'cause I remember what I'm missing

I'm not suggesting that I wish that it was me
Simply losing a friend I had since I was three
On the road and you still filled my social calendar
Some redhead comes along and now I'm a non-factor
Not saying I despise her but...

I couldn't care less about your China patterns
Swear to Lucifer if I have to look at another photo
Tell me again how you're both ruled by Saturn
I'll disassociate or flip into the danger zone
Hard to tell my own mind when it's filled with China patterns
And patronising quips about catching the bouquet
The boy I love, his ashes are about to be scattered
Don't really wanna save the date, babe

Seems to me that her grass is looking greener
While you've turned yellow and changed your demeanour
Not bitter, just a fact, an observation
And it's not the only one I've been making
Though who am I to go against your biggest wishes?
Promise I'm not that sick and twisted
So, for now, it's farewell, my old friend
Perhaps, someday, I'll see that face again

I couldn't care less about your China patterns
Swear to Lucifer if I have to look at another photo
Tell me again how you're both ruled by Saturn
I'll disassociate or flip into the danger zone
Hard to tell my own mind when it's filled with China patterns
And patronising quips about catching the bouquet
The boy I love, his ashes are about to be scattered
Don't really wanna save the date, babe

Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend
Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend
Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend
Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend
Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend
Farewell, farewell, farewell, my old friend

Maliah: Holy shit, my girl really levelled up in 2025, look at you GLOW! The overall theme of the song is universal, there’s no doubt that lyrically this is as relatable as any song. I love more than anything the fact that each track has its own distinct soundscapes, the four tracks you’ve dropped this year have all experimented with different genres and sounds and that’s fucking huge in 2025 where it’s easier to just play it safe. I think you’ve already planted that flag for a HUGE 2026 and “A Woman’s Work” is now easily my most anticipated release for the new year. xx

Erich: I'm so American I didn't even notice the gunshot until reading it was cut from some stations.i was listening to this in the car and the power of this song instantly rolled the odometer back to zero and all the rust instantly was fixed. Also I can now run faster, jump higher and have a bigger willy.

Erica: guy best friend? Mercedes wrote this....is this about chaelin?! I fucking hated that bitch. You just know she had the UGLIEST taste in decor. I thoroughly embrace woman on woman hatred when it's warranted.

Mariko: Jesus. Get the fuck over it, Hitomi.

Ryan: I am honored that my work is cited as holding any sort of inspiration in the cosmic sphere for other's art. I'm a firm believer that the best writing comes when you can find a way to tie in your true feelings and experiences while still leaving enough space for the listener to connect their own lives into it. While you are far past that moment and earned the clear-eyed perspective that comes from time, somebody out there is in the thick of it all. This song can be described as a little "catty" - and that's not a bad thing! Your vocal delivery is spot on with matching that. I love the energy it carries sonically too, which lends itself quite nicely to the obvious emotions. I love this song, and very much looking forward to your album. If you ever need me grab a guitar and jump on this one live, I believe there will be about 130 opportunities in the near future to do so.
