Ashford: Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s been a minute, how have you been, you all good? We are back with our annual year-end discussion and I’ve gotta say we’ve been treated to an incredibly eventful and entertaining year in the music industry. There’s a whole lot to unpack, but we’re going to be doing things slightly differently this year, rather than going chronologically through the years big events and releases, we’ll each be answering a whole bunch of year-end questions and giving our opinions and reasons on our selections for each category. Of course as is tradition, I won’t be doing this alone, I’ll be joined by three Half-Moon Music presenters and contributors which are Cara Zayn, Maliah Aguilar and Bada$$ Morales. That’s definitely a collection of people with different tastes and ideas on what makes great music, so hopefully we can bring strong arguments and good debate without things becoming aggressive.
One final note before we get started, some of you may have noticed a lack of content from Half-Moon Music in 2025 with Maliah Aguilar propping things up with her outstanding podcast series. Beyond that there’s been no additional content from Half-Moon Music in 2025 and I have to confirm that Half-Moon Music will be inactive likely for the first half of 2026, hopefully we can relaunch things just ahead of summer 2026. But we wanted to make sure that we came together one final time to celebrate the efforts of those that have worked incredibly hard in 2025. So without further rambling let’s get on with out Hot Takes and not so Hot Takes for the year.

Who was the breakout artist of the year?

Maliah: I think I can confidently say that my pick Rico Love was easily the breakout artist of 2025. It wasn’t a huge year for new artists coming through, but Rico delivered us two back to back bangers with “Mr. Loverman” which was truly a risky fucking track to debut with, it was confident and hugely explicit but it made you pay attention, it felt like a statement single whether you agreed with the graphic nature of it or not. I loved it but it was the follow-up “Hypnotised By You” that established him as the one to watch. There’s not a whole lot of artists that come through with two hits out of the gate, he’s already got that number one single to his name which will immediately open so many more doors for him in this industry. I think he’s destined to be one of the top male artists in the next few years, no doubt. He’s got that whole package.

Cara: Fuck, I think Maliah picked the standout. I think it was a year of established artists levelling up, but I’m going to go with Mothers of Tigers for breakout artist. I know they technically debuted at the back end of 2024, but their second single “Mermaids and Shipwrecks” came out this year, so I’m going to play fast and loose with the rules for this one. I’m fan of the more alternative side of the industry and I feel like they brought a little bit of that alternative rock swagger back into the industry. Also, their performance at the UMA’s with Erich Hess was a fever dream I didn’t want to wake up from. Their my pick, but I’m happy to concede to Maliah on this one.

Bada$$ Morales: Man, I just wish these new artists would come into the game and really fucking make a statement, like fuck, what you taking your time with? Rico dropped two back to back hits this year and that’s the sort of statement I wanna see but go further with that. Jump on a feature, release a couple of alternative takes, showcase yourself more than just a single every seven months. Maybe we blame the labels and their rollout’s, I dunno. But I just wanna see a breakout artist do shit like the established ones do. My pick is gotta be Sierra Roe, though. She came in, dropped a single that showcased her style and grabbed a hit with “Kill or Compete” but ain’t followed up that momentum. They should have had the follow-up ready as soon as the first single dropped, cause now that heat that surrounded her debut has faded out some. I think she’s one to watch, but we need more.

Ashford: Could be recency bias but for me it’s gotta be Danse. A lot of people don’t like the TikTok hits, but this dude proved it’s power with “Scar Tissue”. It’s a throwback with a modern twist and think we’ve just been introduced to a visionary artist that will have zero restrictions throughout his career. I think he’ll be without the restraints of genre and could be a game changer in terms of how music is rolled out going forward. I also think he’s the sort of artist that will benefit from a staggered release plan because so little is known about him, there’s a sense of intrigue that surrounds him as an artist, so a slower rollout could actually work in his favour to keep that mystique.

Who delivered the best live performance or tour of the year?

Cara: Like alternative music, the decline in live music has been a major issue over the years. I feel like 2025 we’re starting to see things shift once again. We’ve had a couple of major tours and some live shows that are worthy of noting. But for me, I was lucky enough to catch my friend Amy Meyer’s surprise show in her hometown of Las Vegas back in October, seeing her back onstage and at her energetic best was just a highlight of the entire year for me. She’s insanely private and just as stubborn, so she doesn’t just put herself out there in the spotlight constantly. There’s a lot that’s been made of her not wanting to revisit the whole Riot! band stuff and she just proved how strong she is on that subject when she performed in Vegas with a set that had literally no Riot! in the Boulevard material. As a friend, I’m incredibly proud of her integrity for staying true to her own feelings and not getting the band back together, but as a fan, you can’t help but wonder just what a new Riot! track would sound like, or just imagining what those live shows would be like.

Bada$$ Morales: There’s only one choice for me and it’s Jadyn Ghalen’s world tour. I caught about six shows on that North American leg and two in Europe and that shit just did not get boring once. It’s a high energy, high production tour and he’s running on the back of a peak year. But this shit is even more insane when you see that he brought Keshia Love and Kara Romero on that tour as opening acts. Like, this bitch was ready to sell her home and follow those three on the whole damn tour. Keshia could announce a headline tour tomorrow and sell that shit out, Kara’s already selling out headline tours all over the world and jumped on the tour just to fucking hang. You’re getting three headline acts every motherfucking evening and you can’t say that shit ain’t insane in 2025.

Maliah: Come on guys, there’s only one answer, Weekend, one night only at Wembley. It was nostalgic, it was life-affirming and it was so incredibly emotional. I literally flew direct from California for that show I just had to make sure I caught it live. I went with a bunch of friends including Kara Romero and even she’d say that was the best live event of the year ahead of her own supporting slot on the Jadyn tour. Shoutout to Jadyn’s world tour too though, I caught the California shows and that shit was a whole lot of fun. But for me, deep in my heart there can only be one answer and that’s Weekend.

Ashford: We have the same pick for this one Maliah, it was a perfect evening from start to finish. It felt like a greatest hits tour which is insane for how young those guys still are, but it was absolute nostalgia and I’m not sure there’s a setlist in the world that could compete with the onslaught of hits that Weekend ran through on that evening. Shoutout to young Jack Dunn too, he opened the show for them and delivered a confident and tight set of his own in front of probably the biggest crowd he’ll perform to, he set the ball rolling. But realistically Weekend could have came out, performed eight songs and left and it would still have been considered the live event of the year for me. I’m hopeful that the industry is fixing the live event issue because 2025 has definitely seen an increase in must see events. We have Ryan Ross Hernandez touring next year, so it’s definitely looking up.

Which artist had the best comeback this year?

Maliah: There was a lot of comeback singles in 2025, but I’m not sure if there was a true comeback run just yet. But the one I was most happy to see make a comeback in 2025 was definitely Lincoln with “Overdrive”. He’s just always been consistently great, when you see his name pop up on a new release its never a track you just scroll past because you know that it’s gonna be a great listen. He’s got the voice, the look, the production, it’s just like pop music done to perfection to me and it may not have continued into 2025 but hopefully it was a warm-up for 2026 for Lincoln.

Ashford: I think you put Mercedes at the very top of this list without any further consideration. BUT it’s literally three outstanding tracks on the bounce with “No Guts, No Glory” with Riley, “Makeshift Chemistry” and “The Horse You Rode In On” with Jack Dunn. Three number one hits in succession isn’t an easy feat in this industry and to do it without a big discography behind you is a remarkable feat. We all know she’s got a busy schedule rubbing shoulders with Nobel Peace candidates. But just proved in 2025 that her talents know no bounds.

Cara: Soft spot pick for me is Barbie Doll, a face from the past that I worked with in a previous life as a label executive. But comeback GOAT has to be Andrea for me. Maybe I’m playing fast and loose with the rules, but I consider it a comeback. She finally gave us “Southern Belle”, an album we thought we were never going to get. But she also brought us into the next era with “WET AMERICAN DREAM” which is just a high energy fever dream. I’m obsessed with her “Southern Belle” era, for me that was perfection at the time she launched that era, lost a little momentum as it kept getting shelved but I couldn’t have been happier that we finally got that completed project.

Bada$$ Morales: Yoooo, I’mma keep it real with you. Tika Mays is my most frustrating artist in this industry, she’s literally got it all to be one of the biggest names in the business but she needs to start putting things out more consistently. Everything she does is a fucking bop but she disappears for too long to build that momentum. I know she got a bunch of projects outside of her solo work, but girl you need to start putting your shit first! “Star” was a comeback ANTHEM, but her next single better not be so long away, cause girl I can only wait for so long. Because of that, I’mma throw Deneil’s name out there in the same boat, cause holy shit, don’t let me lose my composure now! “Khandon” set the year off on the right track, but ain’t no further announcements. He gets a pass cause lets face it, anybody involved with Drew Westbrook gotta step away for a hot minute to deal with the mental scars. For real.

Whose fanbase grew the most in 2025?

Ashford: I think I’ve got two picks for this one. The obvious technical answer is surely Danse, he’s gone from a virtual unknown to a viral star overnight, that’s surely the undeniable factual answer just in terms of sheer numbers. But non-technical answer would probably have to be Jack Dunn. Sure, his 2024 was his breakout year, but I’ll guarantee there would have still been a lot of people late to that party in terms of becoming fans of his, or just some people waiting to hear a little more before they fully commit. But the two biggest factors would have to be opening for Weekend, which means you’ve just effectively doubled whatever fanbase you already had and then some, just by association. And being featured on a song with Mercedes which I have no doubt would have had a similar effect. I feel like 2024 was the debut year and although 2025 hasn’t been a hugely productive one for him in terms of releases, he’s actually just opened his appeal to an even wider audience by association.

Bada$$ Morales: Shit, for me there’s only one correct answer on this one, Jadyn Ghalen. He started the year on tour as a member of ‘Orion’ and as soon as that tour finished he went into solo mode. We know he dropped a solo E.P back in 2023, but he stepped into the solo business in a big way this year. Going from one of three in a group to solo, he probably took a lot of ‘Orion’ fans with him, but there ain’t no doubt that he’s had to see his own fanbase grow in a big way in 2025, cause he’s had a run this year that has been crazy.

Cara: I’m not on social media so much these days, so I don’t keep up with what’s trending. But I’m gonna go in a different route with this one and say Atomic War Bride. Hear me the fuck out on this one, okay? No bias by association. So all these established names have been leaving Studio60 Records, it’s a label that was built on having already established superstar names on their roster at its peak and now it looks like they’re mostly a label with a wave of newer talent that hasn’t quite hit their peak yet. With those established names gone, surely a lot of that label’s fanbase is going to attach themselves to Atomic War Bride as the only real remnants of a by-gone era for that label. I’m sure one day we’ll figure out how they’re so bulletproof from that label. They’ll win, purely by being the last ones standing.

Maliah: Touched on it before but I can’t look past Rico Love on this one. Sure he was a member of 5th Avenue a long ass time ago and already would have had a fanbase from that period. But having been away from the industry for so long, he was pretty much starting from scratch. A self-released debut single that gained buzz pretty quickly, a record deal with RVV INC and then following that debut single up with a number one hit is a fucking crazy rise within just a couple of months. To me, that has to be literally like starting at zero and sky-rocketing at a crazy pace.

Most underrated song of the year?

Bada$$ Morales: Don’t even test me on this one. I got the receipts, cause for me the definition of underrated is that MELVA track “Baby Don’t You Cry A River”, that shit was my jam for a couple of weeks and I still got it in rotation. I feel like it went under the radar for some people but that shit deserved so many more flowers than it actually got. You got that smooth R&B jam type of vibe, thinking this is a fucking heartbreak song but then just hits you with that hip-hop snare and those aggressive hooks. Like I ain’t met MELVA, but I got so hyped for her when that track dropped, like she got attitude and this is a bitch that I wanna play with, cause she was a whole vibe on this track and I need to hear more.

Cara: Underrated by design is probably the right phrase, but I’m showcasing my friend once again cause “pet cemetery” by Amy Meyer was such a beautiful, nostalgia, melancholy almost mid-west emo sort of vibe and I fucking loved hearing something so completely unique. I think we’ve been blessed with a wider range of music and styles this year, but this track really did fill that missing alternative hole in my heart. I love the fact that she finally got out of her Studio60 deal and is on her independent thing now. No chart chasing or heavy expectations of what success looks like from a monetary position. It’s an underrated track because it wasn’t heavily rotated on radio, it missed mainstream music fans attention, it felt very DIY which I hope is the theme going forward for Amy. I love that she could be a mainstream pop superstar tomorrow if she wanted to, but that’s no what she wants. She’s tasted that fame before and knows it's not something to covet.

Maliah: It feels like a whole lifetime ago, but for me I think Midnight20 had the most underrated song of the year with “Yes Or No”. Everybody that knows me, knows that these are my fucking dudes. I was hoping they would capitalise on this track and we’d have a follow-up single already but I know they like to keep us waiting. The attitude and swagger they brought to the table on this single was perfection and I’d be surprised if this one wasn’t up there as one of my most played tracks of the year, cause my boys brought it with this track.

Ashford: For me, it’s a song that I think deserves more credit. It was actually a number one single, so you can say that it doesn’t actually qualify but I think “Hunters” by Ryan Ross Hernandez is a hugely underrated track, the attention has shifted focus to his new record so quickly that I feel like “Hunters” has been overlooked and I personally think it’s his best effort of the year. It came immediately in the aftermath of his departure from Studio60 Records and felt like a revitalised Hernandez, drenched in an Americana vibe, it hinted at his next direction but arguably did it better than the very strong singles that followed after it.

Which genre grew the most in 2025?

Maliah: There’s no doubt about it for me, it’s been building over the last few years but I think we’re seeing Latin influenced music really forcing itself not only into the mainstream but putting itself in a position to be considered the dominant genre or at least compete for that position. The likes of Layla have paved the way for the genre by blending it with pop music and adult contemporary and made it more accessible without fully enveloping themselves in the genre. But with Tahlia, Rico Love, Slim Money, Malik Jarvez and a whole bunch of other young emerging artists, we’re seeing a shift that’s been happening under the radar for a few years now and seeing it bubble up to the top reaches of the industry in my opinion.

Cara: We’ve seen a few traces of EDM this year, I don’t know if it’ll ever reach that peak or be on the trajectory that Latin music is heading, but you’re definitely seeing it showcased more often these days. The biggest hope for me is that a form of Alternative is comes back into things in a big way over the years, but I’ve been hoping for this for a while and it’s just not happening. Bands just aren’t really all that much of a trendy proposition right now, but it’s the sort of genre or sub-genre that just needs that one spark to set the ball rolling once again.

Ashford: It’s undeniable that Country music is probably the genre that has the most momentum right now, we’re seeing popstars dabble in the genre. We’re seeing the most viral tracks of the year being country songs and it’s in an upwards trend. I think it’s a genre where artists will have to be careful to avoid it coming across as gimmicky but right now, the ones dabbling in the genre seem to be doing it justice.

Bada$$ Morales: I don’t fuck around with all different genres and shit, I’m an RnB and Hip-Hop bitch, straight up. We had a lot of RnB jams this year but that’s always been up there as one of the biggest genres. We got some Trap music from Jadyn on his album which was fire, so I’mma throw that genre into the conversation. There weren’t a lot of Trap music in the industry as a whole, but I’m hoping that we’re starting to see that becoming a trend. I think there’s a few artists coming up in 2026 that will showcase more of that Trap sound. So yeah, fuck it. It wasn’t a genre that was all over the industry, but it’s definitely grew more this year, for sure.

Best collaboration of the year?

Ashford: It was one of the first major releases at the beginning of the year, but it’s a track that stood up throughout the entire year which was “Beacon of Hope” by Alicia Lena and featuring Layla, Ryan Ross Hernandez and Jadyn Ghalen. It felt like Alicia had called up the avengers of the music industry in 2025, it was a weirdly accurate representation of the power players of the year all in one track and kicked off 2025 in style. I don’t think it’s a collaboration that would have been on anybody’s bingo cards but it worked perfectly as a track and as a collective. It would have been nice to have seen Alicia continue her 2025 on from that in the same way that the other three did throughout the year. But it was an early treat in 2025 and for me, comfortably collaboration of the year.

Bada$$ Morales: Shit, I loved the Alicia track and the team up with those fellow titans, but for me it was the Jadyn and Keshia Love team-up “Good Lovin’”. The chemistry on the track was insane, ya’ll can try telling me you ain’t fucking but drop THAT music video? Our girl had her tongue on his abs and they out there simulating sex all over the house. They can call it acting, but those motherfuckers gotta be method actors or some shit cause that video was on fire, I can’t blame em’ either cause holy shit, that’s a scene I’d be giving my all in too. My girl Keshia got an edge to her and she showed that on the track. Jadyn bringing it all on show again in a year I ain’t sure he could ever replicate.

Cara: Shoutout for the Kara Romero and Younghood E.P. We don’t get a lot of extended collaborations these days, but this was a fun un-expected bunch of tracks, full of lust and sexual tension. It felt a little throwaway, like they put it out there quickly and it was done, no interesting roll-out plan that really extended its impact. The tracks were wild as fuck and it was interesting to hear this side of Younghood. Kara has that natural sensuality and an unapologetic vibe about her songwriting anyway, so it wasn’t much of a stretch for her. But it was something a little different, I’d have preferred them to have made a bigger run at it and put some promo behind it a little more. But it was a wild ride for a little side project.

Maliah: Mercedes and Riley, worked so perfectly as a combination. I’m not sure it’s ever a collaboration that I pictured, but “No Guts, No Glory” really showcased Mercedes artistry and having Riley team up with her, I think he gave the track that focus and extra layer of polish. We gotta thank the track for starting the run of 2025 hits for Mercedes. It was a combination that just worked, I think their friendship and natural connection shone through effortlessly in the track, the theme of the song was a strong concept with a motivational backdrop and the production on the whole thing was elite level perfection. The whole thing was a little piece of pop perfection throughout.

What was the song of the year?

Cara: I’m gonna go with “Makeshift Chemistry” by Mercedes, I could have probably gone with any of her singles this year but chose to go with the one where it’s completely her own. It’s nice to hear a little guitar in there, a little indie rock. Lyrically the references don’t line up the same to an American like myself, but the feeling and theme of the song is one that I’m sure we’re all familiar with. I’m sure Maliah as a London girl relates to the references more than myself on this one, but the fact that it can still translate shows the solidity of the songs overall theme. Girl has got some pipes too and it’s been a breath of fresh air to hear some material from Mercedes this year, hopefully it’s a trend that continues into 2026.

Maliah: For me, it could have easily been “Makeshift Chemistry” because it’s such a vivid portrait of the world that I grew up in and knew so well during my late teens and early adulthood. It’s absolutely universal and rightful of a place at the top, but I’m going with “Khandon” by Deneil, similar reasons because it feels like a piece of my world that I don’t get to experience so much of now. With Deneil, the first thing that hits me right where it’s pure is that voice, that familiar accent, that spoken-sung-rap is a tone, an attitude and a rude-boy swagger that I surrounded myself with back in London. Just hearing his phrasing on the track feels like a warm hug from back home. Half-Moon Music even got a shoutout on the track. But there’s something about his whole thing, the confidence, the thick London accent, wrapped up in that package that I’m always going to be drawn to. At this point it’s in my DNA, I’ve been in California and away from London too long to the point where I’m now craving members of the mandem!

Bada$$ Morales: Holy fuck, we got a lot of Jadyn Ghalen this year. He propped up the rap scene for the year and we got a serious fuck-tonne of tracks from him to choose from. But I’mma go with “Butterflies”, it was one of the earlier ones in his run this year, but it felt like this is the one where it became clear that this boy ain’t just fucking around, he’s levelling up right in front of us. He went all in on the trap vibe with “Butterflies”, that catchy as fuck hook meant that this was a staple in the nightclubs, strip clubs and VIP clubs all throughout the year. The track is full of that confidence and swagger that we expect, and he putting all his vices out on the table and saying exactly who he is, all the shit that he’s drawn to, the excess and everything that comes with success, for me, the first two singles established him, but this one and everything that followed just put him into that GOD MODE. I don’t think you replicate this type of year, so I’mma watch closely to see if we get that fall off.

Ashford: “What I Would’ve Missed” by Ryan Ross Hernandez is a truly beautiful and remarkably raw and real offering. The fact that this song became a chart hit at over thirteen minutes long is a tribute to the artistry and musicianship in itself. It’s a diary entry in the form of a song, it’s a years long internal monologue in the form of a song, it’s raw, it’s beautiful and it’s incredible emotive. It’s a song about ego, it’s a song about self-doubt, it’s a song about fear and it’s a song about perseverance. I can’t praise this enough, it’s not a throwaway single to promote an album and it’s truly a beautiful stand-alone piece of art. For me it’s without doubt the song of the year and that somehow feels like it doesn’t do the track justice, it’s so much more than that.

What was the album of the year?

Cara: Already touched on this one before, but Andrea finally delivering us “Southern Belle” was a treat early in the year. The attitude of this era from Andrea will be so difficult for her to top on this next run. The experimentation with Hip-Hop and Trap, the brilliance of her lyrics, it feels tongue-in-cheek at times and at other times deadly serious, I love that contrast. I was always going to be more hyped for this album dropping than anything else this year just because of how excited I was at the time it was initially announced and teased. It lived up to those expectations and so much more.

Bada$$ Morales: Ain’t a whole lot of albums in 2025, it feels like this year was the build-up and we’ll get the records next year. But for me, there’s only one option and that’s Jadyn Ghalen with “No Pressure, No Diamonds”. The rollout this year from him was done perfectly, building hype and anticipation with each release and really putting the work in to establish himself not only as a solo artist in his own right but also one of the top names in the industry. The album didn’t disappoint but there was a feeling like maybe he’s giving us his best tracks in the roll-out and the album tracks could be filler, but it felt like any track from that record could have been put out as a single and become a hit. Second album is always the real test but I feel like he’s proven he’s here to stay.

Ashford: Ellie-Grace Summers released her third studio album, “MANTRA” early in the year. It feels like this is the record that really takes her beyond that country image and firmly puts her up there as a pop artist. It’s another of those records that has long-been delayed but it was worth the wait. The lyricism throughout the record shows a maturity that makes me confidently believe she can create a catalogue of work that you could put up against anybody, I think she’s the sort of talent that will have an incredibly legacy behind her when all is said and done. I think this album was the first hints of where she’ll be headed next musically, as a standalone piece of work it’s incredible. But I think what this album leads into, will be even more remarkable.

Maliah: I love a true pop record and “Self-Reflection” by Elyar Black was that for me this year. He already has hits to his name, which means there’s already an expectation on your shoulders. But the boy delivered on this album. I would have liked to see a better roll-out cause there’s definitely a couple more hit singles on that album but what we got was a brilliant pop record. There was a little techno, dance-vibe to the album, some R&B chillout vibes and that catchy as fuck anthemic pop style that I think he does just as well as anybody in the business right now. I think this year definitely proved that Elyar was able to step up to another level and I think this is the year that he truly established himself as a big name in the industry. For me, this was truly his breakout moment.

Which artist dominated 2025?

Ashford: Ryan Ross Hernandez truly ushered his next era in, this year. The departure from Studio60 was a pivotal moment where you knew he was about to embark on a brand new chapter. Dropping “Hunters” early in the year, the starkness of that track, it’s Americana influences just signalled that we were going to be getting a different version of Ryan Ross Hernandez and it’s been a year littered with releases that continued that trend of showcasing where this next era is heading. Right now, he works perfectly in that country-sphere where it doesn’t feel like a complete delve into that world but a send-up to the genre, it’s sprinklings of the best pieces of that type of music while completely maintaining that RRH feel.

Maliah: Alright, here me out. He may not have released anything of his own merit, but that doesn’t stop Billy Khan from being the artist that dominated 2025. Dominated doesn’t have to mean releases, it can mean name in the headlines. He was part of the Weekend Wembley show which was probably the biggest event of the year, a number one hit with Weekend for “We Made It”, the announcement of a new Weekend album likely to be in 2026. But his name was front and centre throughout the entire year, can we say DOMINANT KING?

Bada$$ Morales: Fuck, you could should have arranged these questions differently cause every answer has been the same from me for days now. I think we should let Maliah cook, cause bitch you’re so fucking right! I got Jadyn Ghalen for this one though, I’m just basing that shit on numbers, cause we’re talking about a standout year for him, this ain’t happening for him on that level going forward cause nobody can keep that pace. Eight singles in 2025, six solo singles and features on the other two, a hit debut album, a headline world tour AND became a father for the first time. I don’t know what the fuck the dude is smoking, but I’mma jump on that rollercoaster real quick. How to follow it up will be the big question, you can’t go like that every time, but it’s been a standout year, no doubt.

Cara: Mercedes brought individuality to the table in 2025, she brought personality to the table in 2025. Possibly the three biggest hits of the year? She ain’t just going down the easy ass up, tits out popstar route. Each of those tracks had personality, had emotion, had brevity and relevance to a world that we’re experiencing right now. She’s experimented with different sounds and styles and she’s done it all completely on her own terms. I hope this leads to a Mercedes album in 2026, because she’s a rare breed of an artist that has something unique to say right now.

Are you optimistic about the music industry in 2026?

Maliah: I’m optimistic, I think the industry has had its best year in a long time. Certain things that had dropped off in previous years are coming back in vogue now, live tours or events are coming back into fashion once again. I would love to see the rebirth of Festivals and maybe one or two more events that bring us all together in the same environment, but I think there’s a lot to be optimistic about.

Cara: I think we’re seeing the start of a little momentum building. I’m always going to long for those days when things were thriving a little more but there needs to be an understanding that those periods ten year ago were peak times, and by definition peak times are meant to be brief. I think the industry has rebuilt itself in the last few years but I don’t think we’re there yet. There’s just something a little off these days, people used to interact more, they used to support the work of their fellow artist more, there was more appreciation. I don’t think the industry is catered to me or my demographic, but it still shows glimpses every so often.

Bada$$ Morales: Shit, those are some facts. We’ve seen what can be done with hard work and ambition this year. You used to be spoilt for choice when it came to a certain genre of artist, now you just hope you like the handful of those artists that are active. I’d love to some stars created in 2026 cause there’s a lot of talent that’s showed us they got it, but don’t keep that momentum going.

Ashford: For me, 2025 has been an incredibly productive year, probably one of the more productive years we’ve had in some time. I feel like a lot of that productivity leads into 2026, it feels like we’ve been offered a lot of the start of big projects, lead singles from albums that I hope drop in 2026 and if my calculations and estimates are correct, I think we’re in for a very busy year in 2026 from a lot of different acts.

Which artist will dominate 2026?

Cara: We’ve already had a taste of what’s to come in 2026 by Andrea, “Ya-Ya” and “WET AMERICAN DREAM” are a signal of intent and it looks like we could get the next album in 2026, I’m sure there’ll be a few more single drops before the album but I think we’re in for a huge year for Andrea. It felt like finally releasing “Southern Belle” last year was a huge burden removed from her shoulders and if you give her a free year to map out this next project then I think she could easily be the dominant artist in 2026. I wouldn’t be mad at it!

Bada$$ Morales: Shit, I think we’re due a lot of big projects and rollouts in 2026 from R&B and Hip-Hop kings and queens. But I’mma bank on Tika Mays coming through in a big way next year. She gave us a single this year, but she didn’t keep that shit coming like I was expecting. I wanna see Tika going on a generational run next year cause I think she’s got all the talent she needs to be the entire package and sit at the top of this industry. I could throw out some other names I wanna see step it up, but I wanna see some comebacks next year.

Maliah: If Rico Love can build on the momentum of 2025 and take that into 2026 then I think he’s an artist that can dominate. He’s already proven that he can deliver a hit so if we can get a couple more singles and an album project out in 2026, I think we’ve just landed on a potential star for the next few years. There’s not a whole lot of newer acts that come into the business and keep it up, so his 2026 is just as important as his 2025. If he loses momentum he could fade quick, but if he takes what he’s done this year and adds to it, he could be a big name in the industry.

Ashford: Depending on the timing, we still have a month of 2025 left and the Ryan Ross Hernandez album has been teased but hasn’t dropped yet. If that goes into 2026 then it could be a dominant year once again for Mr. Hernandez. If his album drops before the end of 2025, then I’ll have to go for Weekend, they’ve already announced that they have an album coming in 2026 and I think anytime those guys set time aside for a project, it’s automatically going to dominate headlines, charts and the industry as a whole. I think it’s potentially between those two acts for the dominant crown in 2026.

Maliah: And that's a wrap, right?

Bada$$ Morales: Shit, we gone over three hours and no smoke break, Maliah you've done well, girl!

Maliah: We've both done well, hun.

Ashford: Alright, let's wrap this up then. We've gone pretty long, so thank you to everybody that's taken the time to watch or listen to this episode. Please drop your comments below on the episode and let us know how wrong we've got our answers this year.

OOC: Changed it up slightly this year and it ended up being even longer and more in-depth than last years! These things are an attempt to highlight as much that has been created by everybody within the year, so I've tried to include as much as I can while keeping true to the hosts preferences. It's been a pretty big undertaking to go through a years worth of work on here, but hopefully you've enjoyed reading through it and being reminded of how much you've all put into this place in 2025.

Danse: Thank you so much for all of the kind words throughout. I can't quite believe how my life has flipped over these past few months. This time last year, I was fretting over the hours I was given at the depot on the holiday rota and now my name is being brought up in conversation alongside the industry's biggest stars by the most respected reviewers and commentators in music. It is truly perplexing but utterly humbling. Thank you so much for not only platforming me, but for all the goodwill too.

OOC: Once again, thank you so much for doing this. I always love reading these. Such a great way to include the entire forum and highlight everybody's work and achievements. It's a very noble and selfless thing to do. I know it can't be easy and definitely not something that can be churned out on a lunch break so I really appreciate you doing this for us. I like to think others will also show their gratitude. We're a small forum these days and have to support one another in every way we can. You certainly have played your part. This is such a wonderful, enjoyable read! Also have to state that I'm a big fan of the new format. Not that there was anything wrong with previous posts but I really like how this flows! Great job as always, friend :)

Ashford: This business is truly a white knuckle ride, but I thank you for bringing a freshness to the scene, courage and most importantly of all some individuality. That track blew up for a reason, I guarantee your brilliance has been bubbling under the surface for the longest time just waiting for a vehicle to manifest itself in and I think “Scar Tissue” was that vehicle, it was that blessing for us all. You put yourself in that conversation alongside the industry’s biggest stars and I’m sure 2026 will be even brighter for yourself.

OOC: Thank you! I enjoy these end of year recaps, it’s a chance to take a second to look back over the year and see that there was still lots of effort and creativity being put in. I think these sort of projects always just add a little more dimension to this place and shine an additional light on the things people have taken time to create, especially as we’re in a place where response is minimal at best. It was much more enjoyable to do this in a slightly different format which will probably be the norm going forward. I’m glad you enjoyed the read! :)

Ooc: damn, you wrote the hell out of this.

Erica: I'm torn between my loyalty to Mercedes through Erich and my seething jealousy at Amy Meyer for basically stealing my bass player. Both are dandy..but I have to go with Amy. Her stsrthss never fallen or faded

Nina: right. You don't get to do nothing for decades then suddenly get our accolades, love.

Erica: making one of our longest running bits irrelevant? Fuck you, Mercedes.

Nina: next cara will get an ass deflation and then Erica won't be able to do the joke about having a better butt

Erica: I'm...I'm.m not joking.

Nina: oh. So you're delusional.

Erich: atomic war bride is studio60's ride or die. As long as there's a label we will be there. Much like the position in the industry at large as well: we just out last our competition and rise through the ranks.
